Engineering appraisal

We assess the engineering constraints and opportunities of a site at the earliest stage, so proposals are buildable, approvable and cost-aware before design is fixed.

We carry out preliminary road alignments, site levels, drainage and cut and fill assessments at the earliest stage of a development. This gives you a realistic picture of what the site can deliver before land is committed or a layout is fixed.

Our appraisals include a review of any existing technical strategies to flag potential issues, and preliminary SuDS sizing to give an early indication of net developable area. We also prepare constraints plans showing land boundaries, utilities, tree roots, public rights of way, ecology and topography.

The appraisal is prepared alongside our transport planning advice on access, so that access and engineering constraints are tested together from the start.

Former Miskin Primary School, Pontyclun

Apex provided transport planning and highways advice to support the redevelopment of the former Miskin Primary School site, delivering affordable housing through the reuse of an existing community building.

The proposals transformed a redundant school building into new homes and required amendments to the existing site access to ensure suitability visibility was provided onto the highway network.

Apex provided transport planning and highways advice to support an outline planning application for the Cardiff Peninsula development, a major mixed-use waterfront regeneration scheme.

The proposals comprise approximately 1,000 residential apartments, 300 co-living units, 11 townhouses, a 220-bed hotel, around 30,000 sqm of employment space, alongside retail, food and drink, community and leisure uses. The proposed masterplan will create a new and vibrant waterfront development for the community to live, work, relax and visit.

Apex prepared a Transport Assessment and Framework Travel Plan to support the application, with a particular focus on sustainable connectivity, active travel and reducing reliance on the private car.

Cardiff Peninsula

Apex provided expert highways and transport consultancy support for a proposed residential development of 125 homes at Farleigh Fields West, Backwell. The project progressed to a Public Inquiry, where Apex acted as expert witness for highways and transport matters.
