Our input supports wider regeneration objectives, including improved connectivity, public realm enhancement and better integration with surrounding communities. We prioritise active travel and public transport solutions that support long-term change, while ensuring schemes remain deliverable.
We regularly collaborate with architects, urban designers and local authorities to ensure transport and engineering solutions complement and inform the overall vision.
Regeneration sites are often constrained. They may be brownfield, sit within existing communities, or carry historic transport patterns that no longer suit the proposed use. Our advice addresses these directly, looking at how a site’s existing access, severance issues and wider connectivity can be improved, not just maintained, by the new development. Our engineers test what is physically buildable and adoptable early enough to shape the scheme.
Our typical regeneration input includes:
Regeneration is supported by national policy: the National Planning Policy Framework in England (which prioritises brownfield-first development) and Planning Policy Wales (which sets a similar expectation through its placemaking framework). We work to ensure transport solutions reinforce the regeneration outcome, rather than constraining what brownfield and constrained sites can deliver.
Apex provided transport planning and highways advice to support an outline planning application for the redevelopment of a brownfield site on High Street, Pontarddulais, to deliver up to 150 residential dwellings.
Apex oversaw and approved the preparation of a comprehensive Transport Assessment and Travel Plan to support the application and provided ongoing technical support throughout the planning process, including post-application engagement with the highway authority.
The transport evidence demonstrated that the development could be accessed safely, that the Spine Street requirements could be delivered, and that the impact on the surrounding highway network would not be material.
Planning permission was granted in 2024.
