Our audits are undertaken in accordance with recognised methodologies, drawing on guidance from Active Travel England (in England) and Transport for Wales / Welsh Government (in Wales), alongside relevant publications: LTN 1/20 in England, the Active Travel Act Guidance in Wales, Manual for Streets, and applicable local authority documents.
We assess against recognised audit criteria of connectivity, safety, directness, coherence and user experience, considering how people of all ages and abilities will move through and around a site.
Findings are used to identify whether improvements are required and to inform practical, deliverable measures that strengthen active travel provision, support planning objectives and help developments function as genuinely walkable and cycle-friendly places.
Apex provided highways and transport consultancy support for a proposed residential development of 125 homes at Farleigh Fields West, Backwell. The project progressed to a Public Inquiry, where Apex acted as expert witness for highways and transport matters.
As part of our inputs, we prepared an Access Appraisal and Active Travel Review, which comprised a site visit and systematic audit of six pedestrian and cycle routes connecting the site to local destinations, services, and facilities. The audit assessed the quality and continuity of existing walking and cycling infrastructure along each route, identified any apparent deficiencies, and offered targeted improvement recommendations to enhance active travel accessibility for future residents.
