Our work addresses accessibility for patients and visitors, staff travel, servicing and emergency access.
We provide clear, proportionate advice that supports safe and efficient operation while aligning with planning and healthcare policy requirements.
Healthcare developments place specific demands on transport design. Patient drop-off and pick-up patterns at GP surgeries and primary care hubs concentrate around appointment times, and need to be accommodated without conflicting with through traffic or pedestrians, with provision typically required for taxis, dial-a-ride and informal kiss-and-ride. Blue light access is a critical consideration, requiring clear routes for ambulances that remain workable at peak operational times, which we test through swept path analysis. We can also design the access, drop-off areas and ambulance routes to suit.
Our advice is informed by relevant NHS estates guidance in England and Wales. We consider guidance in Inclusive Mobility and the requirements of the Equality Act 2010, as well as applying accessible parking provision requirements, typically at a higher proportion than for residential or commercial schemes. Where appropriate, we adopt the Healthy Streets approach to public realm and active travel, helping schemes deliver inclusive, well-connected environments that support both clinical operation and wider public health outcomes.
Planning application was required for the demolition of an existing light industrial use building and construction of a new Medical Centre.
Apex was appointed to provide transport consultancy support for the planning application, in particular to justify the access arrangements for all movements, agree the parking provision and provide a travel plan to maximise sustainable travel.
